Breast Cancer Survivor Mary Jane Riggs’ Story: The Importance of Early Detection
10/27/2026
At 71 years old, Mary Jane Riggs never imagined she would be facing breast cancer. But thanks to the support of her medical team and family, she is now sharing her story to encourage others not to put off early detection screenings.
Riggs first noticed a lump and some discomfort in April 2023. At the time, she wasn’t overly worried. When the pain continued, she decided to seek medical attention in September, quickly scheduling a mammogram and additional testing. Through mammography, ultrasound and biopsy, Riggs was diagnosed with HER2-positive Stage 3 breast cancer, localized to her left breast.
Her treatment journey brought together a team of specialists dedicated to her care. She received chemotherapy, then later in January 2024, had a partial mastectomy of her left breast.
“What meant so much to me was the kindness and the faith the staff shared with me,” Riggs said. “They made me feel comfortable and cared for when I needed it most.”
Recovery took longer than expected, and Riggs spent additional time healing with support from Tennova’s Wound Care team. Once her body was ready, she began radiation therapy at Tennova Healthcare Turkey Creek Medical Center under the care of Radiation Oncologist Nilesh Patel, M.D. Her radiation treatments ran through October of that year, marking an important milestone in her recovery.
Throughout the process, Riggs says the people who cared for her made all the difference. From physicians to nurses and imaging staff like Lead Mammographer Rebecca Rutherford, R.T. (R, M, BS), she felt supported every step of the way.
Today, Riggs continues routine diagnostic imaging and is grateful to be moving forward. While she still experiences some fatigue, life has brought meaningful moments—including celebrating 50 years of marriage. The couple now shares another reason to celebrate: Both are cancer-free, after he previously battled prostate cancer.
Rigg’s message to other women is simple but powerful:
“Don’t wait. Schedule your mammograms every year. Do self-checks, even in the shower. If you notice something, get it checked right away.”
Her story is a reminder that early detection through regular mammograms can save lives. The breast care and cancer specialists at Tennova Healthcare are committed to providing advanced screening, diagnosis, and treatment while supporting patients with compassion throughout every step of their journey.
